About us

The main task of the Trauma Center is to treat serious injuries (polytrauma, multiple injuries and serious monotrauma) from the North-Moravian region. Severe injuries are the main cause of death in this country in population under 40 and across the entire population they are the fourth most frequent cause of death. Every year it is necessary to treat in the Czech Republic about 10,000 severe injuries, which bring not only serious health but also social and economic problems. Therefore, in terms of the National Traumatological Program of the Czech Republic, treatment of such severe injuries is provided at trauma centres where comprehensive interdisciplinary qualified treatment is provided.

The Trauma Center of the University Hospital thus has continuously prepared trauma department for treatment of serious injuries with acute admission which provides for fluent continuance of the hospital care following the pre-hospital care provided by rescue service and air rescue service, which provides for transport of the seriously injured from extensive catchment territory. The admission part is followed by diagnostic complement and continuous operation of emergency operating rooms having modern equipment for treatment of cavity and limb trauma, including the ensuring of aseptic environment at the trauma operating room with streamlined air flow.

Another priority of development of the Trauma Center of the University Hospital Ostrava is the improvement of use of miniinvasive arthroscopic methods. Wide spectre of procedures of effectively all limb joints is currently performed.

Trauma Center is equipped with the most advanced instrumentation, radiodiagnostic amplifier with laser finder and possibility of 3D reconstruction, DSA, arthroscopic and osteosynthetic instrumentations, monitoring system, etc. necessary to save and treat our patients.

Our workplace is famous for its long-term experience in treatment of complicated and open fractures using external fixators.


The Trauma Center is a regional centre for treatment of severe injuries from the North-Moravian region, where natural cooperation with all surgery departments of the former North-Moravian region continues. There is continued close cooperation with Trauma Hospital in Brno in research of therapy in polytraumatized patients and with the Dérer Traumatology Clinic in Bratislava. In recent years, contact was established with the international society AO International seated in Davos, where the Trauma Center of the University Hospital in Ostrava was chosen as a cooperating centre which participates in introduction of new therapeutic and operating methods.

Trauma Center in cooperation with the Czech Trauma Surgery Society, Surgeryl Clinic of the University Hospital Ostrava and Children's Paediatric-Surgical Society is the organizer of the Ostrava Traumatology Days with international attendance in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, which is an event held every 2 years.
