These facilities can be found in the basement of the department, the entry is possible from both the inpatient units and the outpatient clinic. The department is equipped with the latest radiation therapy equipment, which is available to all patients with virtually no waiting time.  We provide a full scope of radio therapeutic treatment of solid tumors and malignant lymphomas and since the second half of year 2010 we also offer the stereotactic radiotherapy treatment including radiosurgery.
In November 2006, our radiotherapy facility was evaluated by the Ministry of Health and passed an audit with the highest appraisal rating, mark 1 out of four possible. Our centre is also regularly and successfully audited by the State Office for Nuclear Safety.

External radiotherapy

For the treatment of our patients we use two linear accelerators with high energy photons and accelerated electrons; the Elekta Precise Linear Accelerator allows so-called intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), and the Elekta Synergy Linear Accelerator enables image guided radiotherapy (IGRT). Both special techniques are used particularly in patients with tumors in ENT location and prostate.

At the department we also use cobalt irradiator for less demanding techniques. We are in progress of installation of a depth X-ray machine for irradiation of skin tumors. To achieve the precise orientation of the target volume we use so-called virtual simulator, which combines the advantages of a computer tomography and radiotherapy simulator and greatly increases patient comfort when targeting the tumor.

Stereotactic radiotherapy - CyberKnife

CyberKnife extends significantly our treatment options as we can treat patients for whom there was no other treatment option in the past. CyberKnife uses its robotic arm to transmit a bundle of very thin rays from almost every position while having the ability to check the position of the tumor during irradiation.

The treatment with CyberKnife is …

  • Painless
  • Non-invasive
  • Provided in outpatient clinic
  • No serious side effects

It does not require …

  • Fixation frame attached to a body and head
  • Holding a breath
  • Anesthesia

An important part of the clinic is the Brachytherapy section. Here the radiotherapy is carried out by the introducing the radiation sources to corporal cavities (treatment of gynecologic malignancies, neck tumors, lung, esophagus, bile ducts, etc.), by the contact radiation of skin tumors with so called Moulages, or by the application of needles with the radiator directly into the affected organ (breast cancer). We use the so-called radiotherapy with high dose rate (HDR), which is convenient for patients due to the short radiation times. The system allows three-dimensional planning in order to minimize adverse side effects of the treatment.

Non-malignant therapy

In order to provide a nonmalignant therapy to our patients, we prepare the depth X-ray machine for the installation. New patients are admitted without phone pre-booking each Monday or Thursday at 1:00 p.m.
