About us

The Department of Forensic Medicine of the University Hospital Ostrava provides a comprehensive legal-medicine service for the catchment area of the Moravian-Silesian Region (1.2 mil. inhabitants). The service mainly comprises: medical dissections, autopsies and a comprehensive toxicological service including analysis of every substance including addictive drugs. Every year the DFM Ostrava carries out about 1,100 dissections, 2,500 toxicological tests and 4,000 blood/alcohol tests. The DFM Ostrava is ranked among the top forensic stations in the Czech Republic for its volume and range. DFM possesses a modern dissection wing and state-of-the-art toxicological laboratory. It employs nine university educated experts, three of whom are toxicology specialists. Apart from autopsy and toxicology they participate in tuition at the Faculty of Health Studies of the University of Ostrava.

The range of DFM activities cover two basic areas:

  • Autopsy as required by law, i.e. Regulation No. 19/1988 Coll. Its integral role is passing judgment on doctors' mistakes by expert committee’s members which include DFM experts.
  • Toxicology aimed at both clinical and forensic toxicology including blood alcohol analysis using the legally relevant methodology.



The Department of Forensic Medicine closely cooperates with criminal laboratories all around the country and the Departments of Forensic Medicine in Olomouc, Brno and Prague.

The laboratory of forensic and clinical toxicology cooperates with toxicological laboratories in Olomouc and Brno, the National Reference Laboratory of Forensic Toxicology in Prague, analytical laboratories of the VSB - Technical University of Ostrava - and the Palacký University in Olomouc.
