 What is prenatal diagnosis?

The prenatal diagnosis is a set of examinations during the course of pregnancy, which can detect the presence of congenital anomalies of the fetus. It is conducted on the ground of finding an increased risk of the presence of a congenital defect of the fetus, either based on a screening program for detecting congenital anomalies or when the increased risk is determined by the presence of other factors.

What is the aim of prenatal diagnosis?

The aim of prenatal diagnosis is to provide the pregnant woman with as accurate information on the expected condition of the fetus as possible. In the case that the congenital defect finding is confirmed, then the pregnant woman herself decides on the fate of the pregnancy in compliance with the applicable laws of the Czech Republic.

What are the methods of prenatal diagnosis offered by our department?

  • Ultrasound examinations
A noninvasive method of imaging the fetus and other parts of the fetal egg sack using an ultrasound signal. This examination can help to diagnose some visible congenital defects, to estimate the size of the fetus and to examine the function of the placenta. The examination does not require any special preparation, it does not negatively affect the fetus or the mother, and there is no risk of complications. The client can watch the ultrasound image simultaneously while being examined on the monitor connected. A family member who accompanies the client is welcome.
  • Amniocentesis – or taking a sample of amniotic fluid from the amniotic cavity
It is performed under ultrasound monitoring with a long thin needle inserted into the amniotic cavity. After disinfecting the incision area, the needle is inserted into the uterus through the abdominal wall of the pregnant women in supine position. This treatment does not require general or local anesthesia. The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis. Immediately after the treatment the pregnant woman is sent home but only with an escort. Bed rest at home, on the day of the treatment, is highly recommended. For the next two weeks a resting is recommended (sick leave). Complications accompanying this procedure are rated in about 0.5-1%.
  • Cordocentesis – or taking a sample of umbilical cord blood of the fetus in utero
It is performed under ultrasound monitoring with a long ultrathin needle inserted into the amniotic cavity and further into the umbilical cord of the fetus. After disinfecting the incision area the needle is inserted into the pregnant uterus and further into the umbilical cord through the abdominal wall of the pregnant woman in supine position. This treatment does not require general or local anesthesia. This examination is performed either in outpatient clinic or as inpatient 1 day hospitalization – depending on the maturation of the pregnancy and the associated risk factors. Immediately after the treatment the pregnant woman is sent home with an escort. If the pregnant woman is hospitalized, an escort is not required on the second day after the treatment. On the day of the treatment bed rest at home care or during hospitalization is highly recommended. For the next two weeks resting at home is recommended (sick leave). Complications accompanying this procedure are rated in about 1-2%.

What is the screening program for detection of congenital defects?
We understand this term as a set of examinations which determine the degree of the risk for the presentation of certain congenital anomalies of the fetus. These are divided into a laboratory and ultrasound parts. The laboratory testing is performed during the common care in the antenatal clinics. The ultrasound examination can be performed according to the possibilities therein or at consultancy ultrasound outpatient clinics. These tests are mandatory for the gynecologists, however, the pregnant woman may decline them. A positive screening examination means that the risk of the congenital malformations presentation of the fetus is higher than the common population risk, which is of around 3-5%. In this case, the pregnant woman is offered one of the prenatal diagnostic methods.

Practical advice for our clients coming for an ultrasound examination or amniocentesis and cordocentesis

  • When coming for an ultrasound examination it is advisable to be accompanied by the spouse, partner or another family member. In case of amniocentesis and cordocentesis, an escort is required, including ensuring the drive-away.
  • Do not come on an empty stomach.
  • Do not wear light colored and expensive clothes and underwear – damage by disinfectant solutions can often occur.
  • It is possible to ask for taking a "photo" during the ultrasound examination for a fee of CZK 50, video recording is not possible.
  • The above mentioned examinations differ in length according to individual clients, therefore be prepared for a possible delay of the real-time examination as compared with the booked time of the appointment (generally about 30-60 minutes)
  • In the event of any complication after the treatment, immediately contact your maternity hospital in the region or directly our clinic.
